When constructing a personal development plan, you have to begin by identifying the areas in your life that need attention. You have to be aware of where your life is now in terms of what's working and what's not, and also what you are ignoring totally.

Once you have identified the important areas of your life, write down everything that you would like to improve for each area as it relates to your personal growth. In most cases your development goal is going to be about either building on your existing strengths and competencies. The key here is to write down anything and everything that comes into mind, whatever you can imagine write it down.

You want to choose the one goal that you consider to be the most important in any of the areas you have identified, make it a goal that would give your great excitement and make you feel that your year was well spent if you were to accomplish it. Next write a paragraph or two stating why you are totally committed to achieving this goal within the year.

Now that you have completed your plan, it's time to implement it. Start with the first task you must accomplish and keep going until all the tasks are finished. By checking your progress you will be able to reflect on what is working and what is not, so you can adjust your actions or change course if you are not achieving what you want. Though not necessary you may want to include a series of rewards as you make progress and achieve the smaller goals.

Constructing a Personal Development Plan

Have you ever bought something only to discover down the track that you didn't actually get what you thought you were buying... that you've been well and truly scammed?

Of course you have.

Me too.

We all have.

"But with these pills I'm meant to lose 14 pounds in 14 days... without getting off the couch!!"

"Hey, isn't this phone supposed to do neck massage, make a cappuccino... and land the Space Shuttle?"

The advertising and the hype just didn't match the product.

Companies constantly over-promise and under-deliver... it's an age-old trick called 'selling stuff'!

"Oh... you want a steering wheel with that car Mr Harper... well, that's an option"

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Well, this happens in the world of Personal Development too.

Shock, horror.

I know it's hard to believe that someone might actually care more about telling you what you want to hear, or making money than helping you... but try and get your head around it.

Crazy concept I know.

Am I doing the sarcasm thing again?

Sorry.

Sure, there are some amazing, genuine people out there who are doing their best to 'be the change'... and then there are those who are peddling lies or at the very least, half truths.

Too many 'wanna-be experts' espouse messages that are misleading, unrealistic, impractical and potentially dangerous. Good for selling books, not so good for creating real-life results... forever change.

In a culture which is desperate for a shortcut (we are the quick-fix generation) it's easy to sell lies because so many of us don't wanna buy the truth... it's not nearly as attractive. We spend millions every day on weight-loss products because we get sucked in by terms like 'quick, easy, fast and painless'... and we continue to get fatter... because all that crap doesn't work!!

"Yep, I'm gonna get me some o' those seven minute abs!!"

Good luck with that.

It's true, we are an incredibly gullible society, desperate to find an easy way rather than discovering the most effective way.

We don't need more 'success' theories or shortcuts, we need practical, proven, common sense, results-based strategies.

More reality, less fluff.

More honesty, less razzle-dazzle.

For how much longer will we continue to complicate the simple?

Re-invent the Self Help wheel?

Go around in ever-expanding Personal Development circles?

How many different ways can we say the same thing?

If we were to believe some people, it's a wonder that any of us achieved anything before they arrived on the Personal Development landscape with their new 'success' systems and programs.

Lucky us.

Call me crazy, call me old-fashioned... but I (stupidly) still embrace some of those wacky archaic notions like self-control, discipline, planning, determination, focus, passion, commitment and hard work.

I know, I'm out of date.

So out of touch.

Hard work... there's a term you won't see in any advertising literature... can't sell that!

The reality is that creating our best life and fulfilling our potential will always involve a level of pain, discomfort, blood, sweat, tears and commitment. But try and find those facts on the front of a Self-Help book or in the advertising for any Personal Development program.

I won't get too specific about books, programs or individuals (I have an aversion to litigation) but let's just say that you would be well advised to question, explore and consider for yourselves before you buy into someone else's (version of) reality, success or change.

I always tell my audiences "don't believe me... simply listen, consider what I say and then judge for yourself. See if something that I say resonates within you." You need to find your own truth among the ever-increasing mountain of Personal Development information.

Is it possible to create amazing, mind-blowing outcomes in our life?

Absolutely.

Is it quick, easy, simple and painless?

Typically not.

Is it worth making the effort?

Absolutely.

I'm at the front of the queue when it comes to encouraging people to create their own amazing life... relationships, health, career, finances, happiness, fun. And while I believe that most of us are exploding with talent and potential and can do and achieve amazing things, I am also passionate about teaching people the realistic, no-frills, this-is-what-really-works approach to creating their best life.

I care about what happens when the 'Guru' leaves town, the hype and the 'motivation' have died down, you're not 'in state', you're not 'in the zone', your back is a bit sore, the kids are screaming, the bills are mounting and the emotional impact of the workshop, the book, the seminar, the DVD or the CD has long gone. Creating forever change ain't about moments of motivation and inspiration... and it ain't about books, programs or even this article; it's about what you do over the course of a lifetime!!!

A few of my favourite(?) lies:

The lie: You deserve it.

The truth: You earn it, you create it, you work for it.

The lie: If you can conceive it, you can achieve it.

The truth: Not always. I can picture myself running a hundred metres in nine seconds all I want... but it ain't gonna happen. I can picture myself being a rock star in front of 50,000 screaming fans... but sadly, no chance - it also takes some talent. It's great to visualise and create a mental picture, it's also wise to be practical and realistic.

The lie: Motivation will get you there.

The truth: It won't, motivation comes and goes. It's about commitment - that's what keeps us going when the motivation is absent. It's about being totally emotionally invested into that endeavour so that even when you don't 'feel like it', you're still doing what you need to do to create your desired outcomes. When most people have thrown in the towel, you persevere.

The lie: If it's meant to be, the Universe will deliver it to you.

The truth: That's crap. The Universe doesn't give a shit about you.

As I've said before, the traditional concept of destiny is the refuge of the weak. It's for lazy, fearful people who don't wanna get off their ass and take charge of their own life. Some people would have you believe that your future is some pre-determined event that you happen to be an unwilling participant in. Enjoy that reality... the rest of us will be over here creating our own amazing future.

The truth: You will change your life.

To achieve any form of success, personal development should be on top of one's priority. You cannot expect growth in your business when you lack certain aspects in terms of personal growth. Create Goals As Your Stepping Stone

When it comes to self improvement, goals serve as both your driving force and endpoint. In concept, setting a goal is like building a solid foundation. Hence, it ensures that whatever you place thereafter or what steps you take are supported by that strong foundation.

It might seem obvious at first, after all it is what most self-help books would initially point out. But stressing the importance of a goal is critical to your success. When you have a goal, you are able to determine what actions to take in order to reach that. Accordingly, you will also identify whatever it is you need to avoid so as not to be stopped on your tracks.

I can't really understand, since that each human being is responsible for his or her own fate, and personal development techniques provide us some way to work through it.

But why are certain people saying that this is a bad thing?
After all its purpose is genuine good, are those critics not striving for excellent themself?

There's always going to be critics and haters for everything and everyone. I mean, look at how many "God bashers" there are. You can even find people saying water is a bad thing, go figure.

A lot of them, however, probably just got sick and tired of trying something they learned from some self-help guru and failing. So they find it easier to just bash the whole industry. By making self-help a bad thing, it somehow makes them feel better about not living the life "self-help" promised they would experience.

Then there are people who are just skeptical, mainly out of fear of having their hopes up and seeing it crash. So they say those self-help people are just out to scam everyone and none of that stuff works, etc. They place blame on "it" and not themselves.

So don't even pay attention to those people. Keep improving yourself everyday. One day you will live the life you want while those people will still be bashing and complaining.

I have no idea exactly how many personal development, self improvement or so-called self help books were sold over the last year - but I do know that it is one of the fastest areas of growth in the publishing world with millions of books being sold every year. I also know that these self help books aren't making a blind bit of difference. How do I know that? Well, turn on your TV, open your newspaper or take a quick glance at the web's chat-rooms and forums. The world is a more insecure, fearful and confused place than it ever was. At the very least, more and more people feel insecure, dissatisfied and unhappy in the lives.

Surveys testify to people being more fearful, stressed and worried than ever before - even the Second World War didn't give rise to such abject fear as we are witnessing in a millennium where we all were led to believe that humankind was finally making major strides. Indeed, the wartime spirit that galvanized communities together and nations into powerful forces during the Second World War, is nowhere to be seen in a world were obsession with money - whether it's wanting more of it or fearing that you don't have enough of it - is the order of the day, in a society where it is increasingly becoming every man for himself. So what the hell is going on - and I use the world 'hell' advisedly because it seems to me that the normal life is far closer to hell than it is to heaven.

Books like 'The Secret' or 'The Power of Positive Thinking' point towards a brighter, better life if you know how to use your mind and point it in the right direction. On the other hand, Barbara Ehrenreich in her book, Smile or Die, claims that positive thinking has destroyed the US and ruined the world - she states that positive thinking has blinded people to the all too obvious problems and risks that should be noticed, taken into account and counteracted, citing the banking crisis and all that followed as a classic example of the problems inherent in blind positive thinking.

Having worked in the personal development field since 1996 - long before it was fashionable to admit to your friends or colleagues that you were 'into it' - I am firmly of the belief that people who read these self help books - and people who are into positive thinking - are not only fooling themselves but are a danger to themselves and those around them. They read a little, get a 'feel-good' after-glow, perhaps put a little of what they've read into practice for a short while and then convince themselves that things are either better or, worse, that things are about to get better when all the signs point to the exact opposite. Of course, the attitude that things are about to get better is a widely used excuse for not doing what you should actually be doing to make things better yourself.

Reading books doesn't change your life. Thinking doesn't change your life either. Action is the only thing that changes your life - real action on a daily basis - action that you have to take yourself. And I've seen precious little evidence of action. Sure, I see plenty of reaction - but everybody reacts, does it regularly and makes things worse rather than better. Reaction will, at the very best, simply give you more of the same. And more of the same simply will not do.

So, put down your self help books, throw away your positive thinking and ask yourself this searching question? What action could you take today that would make your life better? Be clear, I am not asking you what would make you feel better - I'm asking what will actually make a positive difference in your life - one that will provide you with ongoing lasting benefit. Not knowing your life, I've no idea whether something major needs to be done or, perhaps, it's just something small. But I do know this - I am constantly questioning myself, challenging myself and ensuring that I keep taking the little and large actions that need to be taken to push - yes, you've got to push yourself - my life in the right direction. And I've the results to show for it.

So, what am I suggesting? Very few of us can run out the door and do something startling in the twinkling of an eye. I am also not suggesting that you do something outrageous based on the impulse of the moment - that's just a recipe for more trouble. I am suggesting that you get yourself used to the idea that you can take different action. Your subconscious mind is not used to this idea at all so it needs to be reconditioned. Again, I use the term reconditioned advisedly because we were all conditioned in the first place - by our upbringing, by society even by the trendy notion that positive thinking works.

To recondition your mind you need to start small. Simply doing one of your morning chores differently will, believe it or not, awaken your slumbering mind to the possibility that you can do anything or everything differently - I've seen the enormous benefits of such small steps - so have my clients. The greatest journey starts with the first step - why not take that step this morning and see what happens.
