To become successful in life, personal and career development must go hand in hand and learning to achieve an appropriate work-life balance is one of the most difficult things for many successful business managers to achieve. Finding this balance can also be challenge with different aspects of both lives presenting obstacles on a daily basis, but once you realize that there really are not two separate lives, it becomes easier to attain a workable personal and career development plan to help you grow on both levels.
In many past work situations, the separation between work and life was well defined. At the end of the day you went home and spent time with the family and enjoyed activities completely unrelated to your job. Today, work hours are not always so defined, often clouding the times you have for your personal life and sometimes interfering with what is important to other members of your family. By putting together personal and career development goals, you can better determine what is the most important and how to mesh the two areas together.

One of the easiest ways to start achieving the personal and career development life is to understand how they will work together and improving your ability to say no. There can no longer be one calendar for personal life and one for work. In order to have an appropriate personal and career development balance, only one calendar can be used to prevent conflicts from occurring in one life or the other.
Understanding Source Of Conflict
It is sometimes difficult to know what is going to get you in trouble at work and what is going to get you in trouble at home, but most employers these days understand that most workers really do want to succeed but also need to work on their personal and career development. Bosses may sometimes not understand the importance of a family related activity, presenting conflict between the worker and the family and in many cases the opposite is true.
When working on personal and career development it is important that each person set realistic goals on what they hope to achieve in the future. For example, if you are planning a career that requires frequent travel away from home for extended periods, you and the family has to understand and accept the time constraints placed on family life and be willing to trade that time for job and financial fulfillment.
